D-day on death row

Four inmates on death row at Her Majesty's Prison will get the chance to have their sentences reviewed today before Senior Justice of the Supreme Court Anita Allen.

Senior Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General Gawain Ward last night confirmed that the death sentences of prison inmates Forrester Bowe, Robert Green, Ronald Simmons and Keith Jones will be opened and given a second look this morning.

Forrester Bowe was placed on death row for the shooting death of 20-year-old Dion Roach at an apartment complex in Freeport, Grand Bahama on October 23, 1992. Bowe was later sentenced to death on February 25, 1998. He has been in prison for the past eight years.

He appealed the conviction before the Court of Appeal where it was dismissed in April 1998.

Historic bargain struck

After four months of "long and arduous" negotiations, government officials and The Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) are finally making progress.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Alfred Sears announced that yesterday's signing of the first Collective Bargaining Agreement was a historic one as it is the first document signed by the parties since the execution of the recognition agreement of 1965.

According to Minister Sears, this agreement will provide for peace and harmony in the workplace and will recognise the need or the establishment of a framework within which the industrial relations would be properly managed and pursued. In the end, the five-year agreement will pay out approximately $20.5 million to Bahamian teachers.

The BUT had been pushing for a lump sum payment of $4,000 plus other increases and benefits .

PLP needs new leader to deal with 'issues'

The biggest challenge which faces the 'new' PLP and it's administration, in humble opinion, is the continued presence of Perry Gladstone Christie as its leader. Leadership has been defined as: 'The capacity or ability to lead' (The American Heritage Dictionary, second edition).

Yes, The Bahamas is confronted with a myriad of socio-economic 'issues,' such as teenage pregnancies, marketable skills, a lack of affordable housing, a dubious healthcare delivery system, unemployment, anti-social behaviour in the community and the work place and, of course, insatiable greed and potential corruption.

These all pale, however, when compared with Mr Christie's stark lack of leadership skills and the ability to put solutions in place, on the ground. The ballyhooed 'Anchor Projects' are all well and good but what are they, in fact, doing to elevate the average Bahamian and to encourage the actual creation of entrepreneurs? Nothing, in my view.

US Judges expected to take part in GB Bodybuilding show

Excitement surrounding the upcoming Grand Bahama Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships is creating a buzz among bodybuilders that's getting louder and louder.

With the June 24 competition a little over a week away, bodybuilders, locally, nationally and internationally are putting the final touches to their physiques.

The show will be three shows in one, featuring not just the regular GB competition, but a Novice competition and the USA versus The Bahamas battle.

The show is set to take place at the Hilton Outten Convention Centre.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Grand Bahama Ministry of Tourism.

With Bahamian athletes going on stage against U.S. athletes from the NPC, all athletes may feel relieved to know that not just Bahamians will be sitting at the judges' table on the night of the competition.
