bahamas geographyBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationHard days night for doubles teamsWIMBLEDON, England It was a sporting version of from here to eternity, tennis almost without end, amen. It was a doubles match that didn't quite double everyone's fun, even the two guys who survived. The men's singles quarterfinals? They were interesting to a point. Roger Federer was perfection once again. There were a couple of surprises, Marco Baghdatis and Jonas Bjorkman also moving on. And on a Wednesday of rain delays, Rafael Nadal didn't even move onto the court. The remarkable thing is the doubles team of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor was able to move anywhere. They needed two days and 6 hours, 9 minutes to defeat Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 23-21 in the longest doubles match in Wimbledon and Grand Slam history.Six hours, 9 minutes, and two days.
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about…The weather models must all be huge Beatles fans, because they're all singing those lines from “Strawberry Fields Forever" this morning. While a couple of the models showed the development of a tropical storm, possibly heading towards northern Florida or Georgia yesterday, they are not showing this today. That means that while, yes, this area of weather over the Bahamas could drift towards us and make for a weekend filled with showers and thunderstorms, there is very likely no chance of it becoming a tropical disturbance. For what it is worth, the local National Weather Service forecast has typical values for this time of year with regards to precipitation chance (30 percent) for the weekend. So hopefully we can all stay dry this weekend, or at least it can stay dry on your side of the street.
ALL-STAR NOTEBOOK Schmidt probably won't pitchNational League manager Phil Garner said Chris Carpenter and Schmidt aren't in tonight's plans because each started games on Sunday. Schmidt threw 94 pitches in the Giants' 3-1 loss to the Dodgers."For sure Carpenter and Schmidt," Garner said. "Those are guys as it stands right now I would definitely hold back." Schmidt was named to the 2004 All-Star Game in Houston, but he didn't pitch. Like this season, he started the Sunday before the break, having thrown 127 pitches. Though Garner said Schmidt isn't in his plans, Schmidt spoke as if he could still get in the game. "If it comes down to it, the ninth inning or something, and they need a guy, I'll be available," Schmidt said. "I'm leaving it up to them. ... But you have to be smart about things, too. We have a big second half coming up for us, and I definitely want to be as healthy as possible." Aside from Schmidt and Carpenter, Bronson Arroyo also started Sunday, but Arroyo said he'll be available tonight.
Sir Lynden's contributionsThe historical significance of the Government's decision to rename Nassau International Airport in honour of The Bahamas' first Prime Minister, the late Sir Lynden Pindling, cannot be understated.A good case in support of the Government's decision is made by Rev. Dr. J. Emmette Weir, in a guest commentary published in Saturday's Guardian, in which he cites several accomplishments by Sir Lynden during his years as Prime Minister that clearly support the fact that he made "significant contributions to the political, economic and social development of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas." Indeed, the vast majority of Bahamians if they are honest in their assessment of Sir Lynden's contributions to this country would agree that no single person in the modern-day history of The Bahamas had a greater impact on the social and political transformation of the country than Sir Lynden did.

The Dribble, Dish and Swish Challenge and the Three-Point Shoot Out will take place prior to the East and West All-Star Practices at Madison Square Garden. The competitions begin at 1:30 p.m. and are open to the public free of charge. Sue Bird, the winner of the event in 2005, will defend her title against challengers Deanna Nolan, Seimone Augustus and Cappie Pondexter. All players must observe basic ball-handling rules throughout the course and the two players with the fastest times from the first round will advance to a final head to head competition to determine the champion.
