Caribbean calling? - US Airways delivers the deals

If surf, sand, and azure waters beckon, US Airways has a slew of deals designed - just perhaps - specifically for you, with prices from the northeast ranging from $539.

From Boston (BOS), that $539 buys you round-trip discount airfare plus three nights at Comfort Inn Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

If your destiny awaits in the Dominican Republic, specifically Punta Cana (PUJ), US Airways offers an all-inclusive deal at the LTI Beach Resort for $655. That includes round-trip discount airfare from Philadelphia (PHL), and three nights' accommodation.

UNITED NATIONS

Occasionally at the United Nations, conflicts, crises, and debates on pressing international issues are forced to share center stage with other global events - like the World Cup.

"Before the World Cup, the place in the United Nations to meet different ambassadors was the Indonesian Lounge," a hideaway outside the General Assembly chamber, said Argentina's U.N. Ambassador Cesar Mayoral, whose country is a contender for the cup. "Now it's the set of televisions - because all the ambassadors are watching football and not watching the papers" dealing with U.N.

Wave Expected To Bring Weekend Rain

MIAMI -- A disorganized wave that is moving west across the Caribbean and into South Florida is likely to increase rain over the weekend, but it should clear out before the Fourth of July celebrations begin.

Friday, cloudiness and showers extended from the southeastern Bahamas northeastward into the Atlantic Ocean for several hundred miles.

Upper-level winds are strong near the Bahamas, preventing the wave from strengthening. Development of the system is not anticipated as it moves generally northwestward at about 10 to 15 mph.

There is a 50 percent chance of rain on Saturday, with the chances increasing on Sunday. The forecast for Sunday calls for isolated showers and thunderstorms in the early morning, then mostly cloudy with numerous showers and thunderstorms in the late morning and afternoon.

Darden Is Delicious

Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI) just can't seem to do anything wrong at the moment. Earnings-per-share growth came in at 21% for the fiscal year ended May 28, above 20% for the second year in a row. Revenue and EPS for the fourth quarter came in right at expectations, while EPS for the year beat estimates. Same-store sales growth was positive for the seventh quarter in a row overall and reached the 47th quarter in a row for Olive Garden. That's almost 12 years of quarterly comps growth, folks!

Gross, operating, and net margins all improved for both the fourth quarter and the year. This follows the trend I noted in my earnings forecast article. Looking at another metric, average inventory for fiscal 2006 fell as a percentage of revenue, compared with fiscal 2005, despite a rising cost of seafood -- the stock in trade at Red Lobster.

GSM Contract Expansion for The Bahamas

Nortel has been awarded a GSM expansion contract in the Bahamas from the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC). The contract will also allow the operator to triple the capacity of its wireless network, extending service from Abaco and Bimini to include all the Bahamas' family islands by the end of September 2006.

With this investment, BTC will also extend enhanced roaming capabilities, further accommodating international visitors and making the Bahamas a more attractive destination, thus providing them service while on the island. The announcement was made today at the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) 2006, 22nd Annual Telecommunications Conference and Trade Exhibition at the Barcelo Bavaro Convention Center in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
