Nestor, Knowles win longest doubles match in grand slam history

LONDON — The "Ooohs" and "Aaahs" from an appreciative crowd began during warmups, when Roger Federer volleyed one ball through his legs. His artistry grew more impressive once play began for real.

Facing the last man to defeat him on grass, three-time Wimbledon champion Federer quickly turned the Centre Court rematch into a mismatch, beating No. 7-seeded Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the semifinals.

If the score was routine, Federer’s play was anything but. Some shots were so sublime that even the Swiss star was taken aback.

"I definitely had a period where it was so good, it was just incredible," said Federer, bidding to become the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1976 to win Wimbledon without dropping a set. "You’re not afraid to try anything, you’re not afraid to hit the ball hard, you’re not afraid to go for aces.

BHCAWU elections

The Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union should not be left to languish for too much longer without a person being in charge, who can definitively lay claim to the presidency. If that state of affairs were allowed to continue, it could eventually lead to chaos and a breakdown in the orderliness of the union's business.

The general election for the officers three weeks ago ended in a tie vote for the leadership and up to now new date has been set for a runoff to determine conclusively who the president should be.

The incumbent president, Pat Bain, is in a tenuous position having lost his executive slate, except for the general secretary, and the other elected officials have categorically stated that they want him gone.

Technically, Mr Bain is still the president as he did not lose the position, but he will forever be between the proverbial rock and hard place when it comes to getting his programmes moving.

Blood testing pushed for diseases

WASHINGTON - Blood banks turn away up to 150,000 would-be donors each year on the slight chance they picked up malaria while traveling to any of dozens of countries.

At the same time, concern is growing that a second parasitic infection from abroad -- the Chagas disease rampant in parts of Latin America -- increasingly threatens donated blood.

Both infections are rare here, but there's no way to test donated blood for either one. Now blood banks are pushing for better safeguards that also could help stretch the nation's tight supply.

First up, malaria: Next week, the Food and Drug Administration opens debate on how to balance the need for blood with Americans' increasing travel to malaria hot spots, and to urge manufacturers to develop a malaria test to solve the problem.
