Longest match no laughing matter

AUSTRALIAN Todd Perry has been defeated in the longest match in Wimbledon history. Perry and his doubles partner Simon Aspelin of Sweden lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 23-21 to Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and Canadian Daniel Nestor in the quarter-finals.

At six hours and seven minutes, it shattered the record for the longest match since the tournament began in 1877. The longest previous match was Greg Holmes' 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 14-12 victory over Todd Witsken in five hours and 28 minutes in the second round of singles in 1989 — a match spread over three days.

Perry's match began on Tuesday about 4.30pm, was called off because of poor light at 11-11 in the fifth set, and finished on Wednesday after another 23 games.

Knowles and Nestor saved six match points en route to victory.

Petrocaribe Deal Slow to Take Effect

One year after 13 Caribbean countries signed a deal with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to buy oil under preferential terms, a majority of them have not received a single drop of fuel, while those that have are still paying high prices at the pump.

Cash-strapped Caribbean countries have welcomed the pact known as Petrocaribe as a way to counter soaring oil prices. But eight nations say they haven't gotten fuel shipments yet, largely because they're figuring out how to handle them.

The program has gotten bogged down because many governments don't have state-owned docking or storage facilities, or the know-how of running an oil business - a task they previously left to private companies.

While Chavez's critics say he is using "oil diplomacy" to build anti-U.S.

Sean Connery to write book on his life and Scotland

BEIJING, July 11 -- Sean Connery, who has said he would not live in his native Scotland again until it became independent, is writing a book about his birthplace mixed with autobiographical anecdotes, his publishers said.

Canongate Books of Edinburgh said it had acquired world English-language rights to the film star's memoirs, "Connery's Scotland," in conjunction with Polygon.

"Our goal is to produce a very readable, visually stimulating and hopefully intriguing history of Scotland, with personal discoveries," Connery said in a statement.

Best known for his screen portrayal of fictional British spy James Bond, 007, Connery will work in collaboration with writer and filmmaker Murray Grigor.

Connery, the Edinburgh-born son of a truck driver, worked with Grigor on the award-winning documentary "Sean Connery's Edinburgh." The star now lives in the Bahamas.

Rains will continue this weekend

Summary: A cold front met a tropical wave over Southwest Florida on Friday and the result was a soaking.

Southwest Florida found out Friday what it's like to be caught under a colliding tropical wave and cold front.

It's wet.

As much as four inches of precipitation soaked parts of Lee County. Road flooding was reported in Cape Coral and parts of Fort Myers. A WINK-TV weather watcher in North Port registered 3.5 inches by mid-afternoon. And Port Charlotte topped 2 inches. Punta Gorda had 1.81 inches.

A certainty was that the rain wasn't finished.

Another two inches was possible before midnight.

A cold front moving through the Southeast had shifted winds to blow onshore from the Gulf, and that triggered overnight and early morning rains along the coast Friday.

United States reaffirms its commitment to drug fight

NASSAU – The United States Government remains committed to Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) joint counter-narcotics operation in The Bahamas, Dr. Brent Hardt, Chargé d' Affaires at the U.S. Embassy, has confirmed.

Dr. Hardt made the statement at the semi-annual U.S.-Bahamas Counter-Narcotics Joint Task Force meeting on Friday, June 16 at the Office of the Attorney General. The meeting was co-chaired by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Mark Wilson.

Dr. Hardt's statement came in the wake of local reaction to news suggesting that the U.S. might remove black hawks from the support of OPBAT, an instrumental asset in the fight against drug trafficking through The Bahamas to the U.S.

"Pressures on the Army to meet worldwide counter-terrorism missions have promoted a close review of OPBAT's resource needs and how best to meet them," Dr.
