No word from BEC's Basden

BEC General Manager Kevin Basden has yet to respond to the latest threat made by members of the Bahamas Electrical Workers Union (BEWU) to carry out "massive" industrial action.

The Guardian repeatedly tried to contact Mr Basden since yesterday morning to get his response to the electric switch-off threat, but he was unavailable for comment up to press time. Numerous calls to his office and cell phone went unanswered.

BEWU president Dennis Williams told the Guardian Monday night that members made the decision on Sunday during an emergency meeting, but he remained tight-lipped as to how far their threats would go.

"While I will not get into any specifics the union is being forced to carry out this action," he said. "We just have anti-union leadership in BEC.

NBA players conduct one-day hoops camp

Taking young basketball players back to the basics of the game, members of the NBA/WNBA Players Associa-tion conducted a one-day clinic yesterday afternoon at the Kendal GL Issacs Gymn-asium.

The clinic was part of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Sports combiningg their efforts to capitalise on 'Sports Tourism'.

The two goverment ministries sought the assistance of the Bahamas Basketball Federation in getting participants for the one-day clinic.

And at short notice, the BBF was able to attract more than 100 kids to the clinic. BBF executive Lawrence Hepburn said that he was very pleased with the turnout. "This clinic is the first of its kind in the Bahamas. To hold a camp this size with such short notice was a tremendous task for us.

Malaria Risk Reported on One of the Bahamas

Hurricanes aren't the only thing vacationers have to worry about this summer. After a malaria outbreak last month on Great Exuma Island in the Bahamas, travelers are being advised to take precautions against the mosquito-borne threat.

At least 16 people have tested positive for the potentially fatal disease since the first case was reported early last month, according to an update issued by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, which is maintaining close contact with the Bahamas Ministry of Health regarding the outbreak. Most of the people who were infected were Bahamas residents; one was a United States citizen who traveled there in May. The Bahamas has responded with intense surveillance and mosquito control measures on Great Exuma, above, including repeated spraying of the airport area.

Agenda Cuba speaks out

Miami-based Cuban activist groups have claimed that Cubans held at the Detention Centre may be victimised because of recent breakouts at the government facility.

In a press release sent to The Nassau Guardian yesterday, Agenda: Cuba and Movimiento Democracia expressed their concerns over the treatment of Cuban detainees at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre.

On June 29, 2006, five Cubans detained at the Centre escaped shortly after 5:30 am. Leonel Ballestero Perez; Alexander Rodriguez Roca of Matanzas, Cuba; Joel Vegas Torres of Bayamo Granma; Armando Estrada Lazo of Pinar del Rio and David Vazquez Llanes of Camaguey escaped after cutting their way through security fences at the Centre but were recaptured five days later in Juniper, Florida.

Now the Florida-based groups insisted that this latest breakout coupled with the May-escape of Cuban nationals Carina Reyes-Labra, 36, and Denia Mercedes Abreu-Martinez, 30, has placed the spotlight on Cuban detainees.

Thousands back Timor's Gusmao in feud

Thousands of demonstrators have thronged East Timor's capital to support President Xanana Gusmao in his confrontation with the young nation's prime minister, who has refused the president's demand to step down.

In an impassioned speech late on Thursday after talks failed to persuade Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri to quit, the popular Gusmao had said he would resign himself if Alkatiri did not take responsibility for weeks of arson attacks and killings.

That prompted several prominent East Timor leaders to visit the president on Friday and urge him to stay in office, while 2,000 young Gusmao supporters demonstrated in front of parliament and Alkatiri's office saying the prime minister should go.

They blame Alkatiri for weeks of violence marked by the deaths of least 20 people and widespread looting.
